Lawrence Man Arraigned on Assault Charges

Jose Concepcion, 26, of 187 Chestnut Street, Lawrence was arraigned today at Lawrence General Hospital on 2 counts of assault with intent to murder and 2 counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.  Judge Emily Karstetter ordered that he be held pending a dangerousness hearing.

According to Essex Assistant District Attorney Annaliese Wolf, Concepcion was allegedly assaulting  two males with a baseball bat in an alley near the Club Copa on 1 Mill Street in Lawrence early this morning.  One of the victims, a 27 year old, was transported to Beth Israel Hospital for blunt force trauma to his head and multiple stab wounds to his torso.  Upon seeing the defendant assaulting the victims, Officer Green issued multiple verbal commands for him to drop the bat.  After he did not respond, Officer Green fired two (2) rounds from his department issued firearm which struck the assailant in the chest and ended the attack.

The legal justifiability of the police involved shooting will be investigated by the Essex District Attorney’s Office, per protocol.

Attorney Bill Sullivan represented Concepcion for the arraignment only.  A new attorney will be assigned for the next date of December 5, 2012.  The charges against Concepcion are allegations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
