Lynn Man Sentenced to 5-7 Years for Rape
Judge Richard Welch sentenced Douglas Garcia, 39, of Lynn, to 5 to 7 years in state prison today in Lawrence Superior Court after a jury found him guilty of rape. Garcia was taken into custody on Friday after the jury handed down its verdict.
Essex Assistant District Attorney Karen Hopwood proved that on April 19, 2010, Garcia raped the victim, who was 19 years old at the time and known to him. The rape took place in Garcia’s home. The jury deliberated for one hour before returning its verdict following the three-day trial.
In her sentencing argument, Hopwood cited the extreme emotional toll the rape has had on the victim. The victim was supported by an Essex Victim Witness Advocate.
Hopwood praised Lynn Detective Joseph Chadbourne for his work on the investigation.
District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett commended the victim for her bravery. “Rape is a horrific violation. It fosters shame and silence in its victims. Whenever a victim comes forward and faces her rapist in court, it sends the message to other victims that it is not their fault,” D.A. Blodgett said.
Garcia was represented by Attorney Mark Horrigan.
