Haverhill Man Arraigned on Murder Charge

Philip Lucas Defusco, 21, of Haverhill, was arraigned today on a murder charge in the stabbing death of Derric Gaines, 25, in Haverhill District Court.  Judge Patricia Dowling ordered him held without bail.

Essex Assistant District Attorney John DePaulo told the court that at approximately 8:00 pm on October 16th, a witness saw two men fighting inside a white Lincoln.  One of the men fled the vehicle and the other chased him.  At approximately 8:30 pm, police responded to a report of an altercation and found Gaines on the sidewalk in the vicinity of 34 High Street suffering from multiple stab wounds.  He was transported to Lawrence General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

After the witness learned that there had been a fatality, she contacted police this morning with a description of the motor vehicle.  A short time later, police received a call from a woman stating that she thought her step-son had been involved in a stabbing.  She further stated that her vehicle, which is similar to the one described by the witness, had blood inside of it.  After an investigation, police placed Defusco under arrest.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for November 13, 2013.

Defusco was represented by Attorney Thomas Gleason.  He is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
