Lawrence Man Found Guilty of 2009 Murder

Jose Ruiz, 28, of Lawrence, was convicted of murder in the 2nd degree by an Essex County Jury today in Lawrence Superior Court following a five day trial.  Judge Richard Welch III sentenced Ruiz to life in prison with the possibility of parole.  Ruiz was also found guilty of carrying a firearm without a license and was sentenced to 4-5 years to be served concurrently.

Essex Assistant District Attorney AJ Camelio proved that in the early morning hours of July 25, 2009, Ruiz shot and killed Rolando Fuentes, 33, in a parking lot at 360 Broadway in Lawrence.  The shooting was the culmination of an ongoing feud between Ruiz, Fuentes and his brother Orlando Fuentes.

On December 6, 2011, Orlando Fuentes pled guilty to armed assault to murder, home invasion and illegal possession of a firearm for shooting at Ruiz’s house shortly after the murder.  Fuentes shot Ruiz’s father in the neck, seriously injuring him.  He was sentenced to 7-8 years in state prison followed by 3 years of probation.

Ruiz was represented by Attorneys Anthony Ortiz and Paul Moraski.
