Lynn Mother Arraigned on Child Endangerment Charge
Laci Kirk, a/k/a Laci Brand, 23, pleaded not guilty to Wanton or Reckless Endangerment of a Child today in Salem Superior Court. Judge Thomas Drechsler ordered bail set at $15,000. He further ordered that if she posts bail that she have no unsupervised contact with children under 16; remain drug and alcohol free with random screens; abide by a 6:00 pm to 6:00 am curfew with a GPS.
Essex Assistant District Attorney Kim Faitella told the court that on September 26, 2015 just before 7:00 pm, police responded to the Independence House, a family shelter in Lynn, for a report of an unresponsive baby. The baby, just shy of 4 months old, was transported to North Shore Medical Center and then to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he died. Police observed the defendant to be unsteady on her feet and detected the odor of alcohol on her breath. She provided conflicting statements as to how much alcohol she had consumed and how long she had left the baby unattended. Police later executed a search warrant on the defendant’s room in the shelter and found a portable crib cluttered with items.
The Department of Children and Families opened a case with the defendant for lack of supervision in response to repeated reports from the shelter staff.
She is represented by Attorney Mike Phelan and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The case is scheduled for a Pre-Trial Hearing on August 1st.
