As District Attorney, I am committed to holding domestic violence abusers accountable and to protecting domestic violence victims from further abuse. Domestic violence is a profoundly destructive scourge on community safety and public health. Battery by a husband or boyfriend is the single largest cause of physical injury to women in the United States. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately two million injuries and 1,300 deaths can be attributed to domestic violence in the United States each year. Last year, fifty five people were killed in Massachusetts as a result of domestic violence.Over the past decade, legal reforms, increased services for victims, heightened pubic awareness, and aggressive prosecution strategies have lowered the incidence rate. However, domestic violence cases continue to make up a large percentage of the total number of criminal cases involving serious bodily injury and murder. Domestic violence cases present unique and complex legal challenges, because they are typically carried out in the home. Often, the only witness is the victim, and as Supreme Court Justice Scalia has written, “this particular type of crime is notoriously susceptible to intimidation or coercion of the victim to ensure that she does not testify at trial.”
