This site offers condition or disease-specific hospital comparisons based on complication and post operative infection rates and public perceptions. The following are health resources that may be helpful to you. The GIC provides links to these sites to assist enrollees with taking charge of their own health. A link's presence here should not be construed as an endorsement by the GIC. Hospital comparisons on four measures of quality, safety, and affordability
  • Computer Physician Order Entry (CPOE) - entering medication orders via computer linked to prescribing error prevention software.
  • Evidence-Based Hospital Referral (EHR): hospitals with extensive experience and the best results with certain high-risk surgeries and conditions.
  • ICU Physician Staffing (IPS)
  • Leapfrog Safe Practices Score: adherence to 30 practices that reduce the risk of harm in certain processes, systems or environments of care.
A coalition of Massachusetts organizations that share knowledge and information about causes of, and potential strategies for preventing, medical errors.
Evidence-based information to help you maximize your health care experience. Site includes tips for preventing medical errors, checklists for choosing a health plan, doctor, treatment, hospital and long-term care facility, and references to help you prepare for medical tests, plan for surgery and get the most from your appointment with your physician.
Cancer information center for patients and the general public
Lung-related inforamation including asthma, tobacco control, air quality, occupational health, school programs, living with lung disease, data, statistics and research.
General medical reference information, physician lookup (background/malpractice history for past 10 years), hospital finder, and group practice finder. .
Scientific information and applications of sports medicine
General health information, data and statistics

Compares hospital data across regions and states on end-of-life care, including transfers to hospice programs and time spent in the Intensive Care Unit.

Compare physician and hospital performance for specific treatments including hip fracture, stroke, heart attack and maternity services. Cost and utilization information is also available.
Search background and malpractice information of licensed Massachusetts physicians.
Health information, medical dictionaries, encyclopedia and journals; health topics by demographic groups, information on doctors, dentists, public clinics, hospitals, long-term care, nursing homes, health insurance, scripts, fraud, Medicare and Medicaid and privacy.
Compare hospital adherence to quality practice measures for certain medical conditions.
Compare hospitals on 32 conditions and procedures, including complication and death rates.  Note that more comprehensive reports cost $18.
