SOUTH SHORE REGIONAL 911 CALL CENTER NEARS COMPLETION

Lieutenant Governor Murray highlights local partnership in advance of annual Regionalization Conference

HINGHAM - Friday, August 26, 2011 - Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray today visited the South Shore Regional Emergency Communication Center in Hingham to highlight the Patrick-Murray Administration's commitment to strengthening regional partnerships and increasing efficiency in state and municipal services.

The South Shore Regional Emergency Communications Center project, expected to be complete in October, will combine four separate 911 emergency call centers. Once complete, the communications center will service Cohasset, Hingham, Hull and Norwell, and will be the first operational 911 regional center that has received Development Grant funding from the State 911 Department.

"As our economy continues to recover, regionalization should be considered a best practice to make the most efficient use of resources," said Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray. "Our Administration continues to promote regionalization as we provide cities and towns the tools they need to respond to their residents in crisis."

"This project is a prime example of the improvements we fully expected to realize from our Administration's overhaul of the public safety emergency response system," said Public Safety Secretary Mary Beth Heffernan. "We expect, as we continue to promote regionalization, it will prove itself to be an effective and efficient model for the future of 911 services in the Commonwealth."

"At a time when cities and towns face an ongoing challenge to provide publicly funded services, this new dispatch center will allow the towns of Hingham, Hull, Cohasset and Norwell to save a significant amount of money each year," said Representative Bradley. "In addition to the cost savings, these communities will benefit from more efficient and enhanced public safety."

The Hingham project received $5.3 million in State 911 Department Development Grant funding to build and equip the facility. There are currently 29 other projects underway across the State that have received a total of $27,281,494 in Development Grant funding.

Grant funding was first announced in 2008 when Governor Patrick signed a law establishing the State 911 Department and creating grant programs to pay for enhanced training, upgrading equipment, supporting 911 call centers and creating incentives to regionalize 911 operations. Under both federal and state law these funds can only be used to support the 911 system. Since inception, the grant programs have provided $99.4 million to the 911 call centers across the Commonwealth.
