The Latino-American Advisory Commission was established by Executive Order Number 353 in 1993 and revised by Executive Order Number 409 in 1998 by Governor Paul Cellucci. Dormant prior to the Patrick-Murray Administration, Governor Patrick and Lt. Governor Murray are making this Commission active once again.
This Commission focuses on interests and concerns important to Latino-Americans, works to expand commercial and cultural ties with Latin American Countries and the U.S. Territories, and educates the citizens of the Commonwealth regarding the unique qualities, talents, diversities and challenges of the Latino-American community.
In the spring of 2010 the Commission held a series of hearings on the status of Latino Education in the Commonwealth. Those dates were held April 8, 2010 at Worcester State College, May 6, 2010 at English High School in Jamaica Plain, May 12, 2010 at Northern Essex Community College in Lawrence, and May 20, 2010 at Holyoke High School. A final report has not been completed. The Lt. Governor’s office is currently working with the Office of Refugees and Immigrants to draft an updated Executive Order.
