Memorial Plans for Massachusetts Servicemembers Killed in Action Since 9/11/01
On July 15, 2009, Lieutenant Governor Murray announced plans for the official state memorial for the more than 130 Massachusetts servicemembers killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Now completed the traveling memorial is on tour across the Commonwealth. A task force including recently returned Marines, a Gold Star Family Member, the Bureau of State Office Buildings, the Office of the Lieutenant Governor and the Department of Veterans Services developed a plan that led to this announcement in 2009.
The Memorial was on display at the State House from May 27 through the end of July, 2011.
The interactive, computer-based memorial includes a touch-screen podium kiosk placed in front of a large flat-screen television. Visitors are able to search for service members using their names or city/town information. Additional information pertaining to the veterans and the history of military and veterans issues is also available through the memorial.
Please visit the website of Mass Fallen Heroes, the non-profit group running the memorial for details on when the memorial will be near you: http://www.massfallenheroes.org/
