Commonwealth of Massachusetts
A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick

Whereas Throughout the Commonwealth there are more than 858,000 family caregivers providing daily or frequent care for a family member in need; and

Whereas Through their efforts, thousands of the Commonwealth's citizens across the continuum of aging are able to remain at home longer, avoiding institutional placement; and

Whereas The rapidly expanding elder population will produce a significant increase in the number of people with Alzheimer's Disease and the number of family caregivers who will assist them with their needs; and

Whereas These efforts can take a toll on family caregivers who often risk their own well-being resulting in physical, psychological, social and financial hardships that many accept without a complaint and go unacknowledged by others; and

Whereas Family caregivers include: working adults and retirees caring for elderly or younger family members; parents caring for a young adult with disabilities; middle-aged or aging spouses caring for their frail spouse; family members caring for a wounded veteran; as well as grandparents raising grandchildren; and

Whereas Massachusetts operates a number of programs to support family caregivers, including the innovative MassHealth Adult Foster Care Program that provides professional and financial support to family caregivers who have dedicated themselves to caring for individuals who would otherwise need to leave their homes; and

Whereas The thousands of family caregivers in the Commonwealth who demonstrate steadfast commitment and caring devotion to supporting elders and people with disabilities to live independently and with dignity in their homes and communities, are deserving of recognition.

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim November 2013, to be,

Family Caregivers Month

And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.

Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston, this twenty-second day of October, in the year two thousand and thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and thirty-seventh.

By His Excellency

Deval L. Patrick
Governor of the Commonwealth

William Francis Galvin
