A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick

Whereas The SHINE program serves as the local access point to the Medicare and related insurance programs for Massachusetts seniors and their families, by providing free, individualized information and counseling; and

Whereas 600 SHINE volunteer counselors met with over 57,000 clients to discuss their health care coverage options, including seniors sixty-five and over and younger people with disabilities; and

Whereas SHINE counselors are now advising beneficiaries on more than fifty individual Medicare plan options; and

Whereas SHINE counselors conducted over 650 presentations in educating 20,000 Massachusetts residents about Medicare and take an active role in education social workers and health care professionals about the rules that govern Medicare and Medicaid; and

Whereas Each year, SHINE saves the Medicare program and its consumers millions of dollars by enrolling beneficiaries in the programs for which they are eligible; and

Whereas On this day, we recognize the tireless efforts and countless contributions SHINE counselors make to the Commonwealth and its residents,

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim October 7th  - 13th, 2012 to be,


And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.
