A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick

Whereas Many Americans living with gastroschisis have serious and debilitating conditions including but not limited to failure to thrive/slow growth, short bowel syndrome, multiple organ transplants, and long term feeding issues; and

Whereas 1 in 2,229 individuals in the United States are born with gastroschisis each year, including hundreds in the Commonwealth; and

Whereas  Individuals and families affected by gastroschisis often experience problems such as a sense of isolation, difficulty in obtaining an accurate and timely diagnosis, few treatment options, and problems related to accessing or being reimbursed for treatment; and

Whereas Patients and their families must share the burden for raising funds for research in an effort to find a cure for this rare disease; and

Whereas On this day we recognize the resilience of the many people affected with gastroschisis and present our support for their families,

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim July 30th, 2012 to be,

Gastroschisis Awareness Day

And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.

Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston, this eighteenth day of July, in the year two thousand and twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and thirty-sixth.
