Commonwealth of Massachusetts
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick
Whereas Childhood cancer is the number one disease killer of children in the United States, killing more children between the ages of one and twenty than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, and AIDS combined. It is the second leading cause of death during childhood, exceeded only by accidents; and
Whereas Nearly 18,000 children between birth and age nineteen are diagnosed with cancer each year; and
Whereas Childhood cancer survival rates in the United States have increased from less than 20 percent in the 1960s to almost 80 percent today; and
Whereas While progress against childhood cancer has been made, cure rates for some pediatric cancers remain below 50 percent and the causes of childhood cancers are largely unknown,
How, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim September 9th, 2011 to be,
Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day
And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.
Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston, ninth of August, in the year two thousand and eleven, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and thirty-fifth.
By His Excellency
Deval L. Patrick
Governor of the Commonwealth
William Francis Galvin
Secretary of the Commonwealth
