A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick

Whereas Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar; and

Whereas Ramadan is a holiday celebrated by Muslims of diverse backgrounds and beliefs around the world; and

Whereas Ramadan is a time of spiritual introspection for thousands of citizens and residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; and

Whereas Thousands of citizens and residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts spend the entire month fasting during daylight hours; and

Whereas Ramadan’s month-long fast instills a special appreciation for the gift of food; and

Whereas The American Islamic Congress’ New England Council, Project Nur chapters at numerous local universities, small businesses and community organizations are together organizing a food drive to benefit the Pine Street Inn;

Whereas These Muslim-American members of our community are assisting those going hungry in a time of economic distress,

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim September 14th, 2011 to be,


And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.

Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston, this ninth day of September, in the year two thousand and eleven, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and thirty-fifth.
