Commonwealth of Massachusetts
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick
Whereas Austrian Americans continue to be a vital part of the Commonwealth’s rich diversity by contributing significantly to all aspects of daily life, including education, medicine, commerce, agriculture, public service and technology; and
Whereas Among the many prominent Austrians and Austrian Americans are Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, Joseph Pulitzer, Fred Astaire, and Nobel Prize recipients Victor Franz Hess, Karl Landsteiner and Friedrich von Hayek; and
Whereas This year marks the 64th anniversary of the famous Harvard speech by Secretary of State George C. Marshall announcing the Marshall Plan. The assistance provided to Austria through the Marshall Plan has helped to foster long-stranding ties of friendship between our countries; and
Whereas It is appropriate that all residents recognize Austrian Americans for their many contributions to the cities and towns across our Commonwealth,
Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim September 26th, 2011 to be,
Austrian-American Heritage Day
And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.
Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston, this ninth day of September, in the year two thousand and eleven, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and thirty-fifth.
By His Excellency
Deval L. Patrick
