Commonwealth of Massachusetts
A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick

Whereas Today’s youth will be tomorrow’s leaders and, therefore, the Commonwealth’s future depends upon the investments made in their social, emotional and cognitive development; and

Whereas Quality mentoring is a proven, effective strategy that helps children and young adults by matching them with a caring, responsible adult who can provide guidance and build their confidence; and

Whereas Research shows that mentoring has beneficial and long-term effects on youth by increasing their academic engagement and decreasing the likelihood of substance abuse and other risky behaviors; and

Whereas Every day residents of Massachusetts are making a profound difference in the lives of our young people by serving as mentors; and

Whereas Formal, structured mentoring programs provide the critical support that is needed to build and nurture those relationships; and

Whereas Massachusetts is working to expand mentoring and other volunteer opportunities across the Commonwealth through SERV (State Employees Responding as Volunteers), and other investments that support the field of youth mentoring programs; and

Whereas It is appropriate that the citizens of the Commonwealth recognize the importance of mentoring, acknowledge the dedicated individuals who serve as mentors, and encourage more citizens to help build a brighter future for the youth of Massachusetts through mentoring,

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim January 2012, to be

Massachusetts Mentoring Month

And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.

Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston, this  fourteenth day of December, in the year two thousand and eleven, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and thirty-fifth.

By His Excellency
Deval L. Patrick
Governor of the Commonwealth

William Francis Galvin
Secretary of the Commonwealth
