Commonwealth of Massachusetts
A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick

Whereas Every May we are honored to commemorate the rich and diverse culture of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and take delight in recognizing their immeasurable contributions to the prosperity of the Commonwealth; and

Whereas Today the Asian Pacific American community is one of the fastest growing segments of our population. More than 300,000 Asian Pacific Americans have made Massachusetts their home, representing many nations and ethnicities with their unique language, cultural and experience; and

Whereas We acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of Asian Pacific Americans in our state’s social, economic and democratic success, as well as its role in making Massachusetts a great place with diverse culture; and

Whereas The Asian American Commission was established in state government, dedicated to political advocacy on behalf of the entire Asian Pacific American community and will be able to make a positive and lasting impact on the lives of the Asian Pacific American community throughout the Commonwealth,

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim May 2012,  to be

Asian American Heritage Month

And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.

Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston, this first day of May, in the year two thousand and twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and thirty-fifth.

By His Excellency

Deval L. Patrick
Governor of the Commonwealth

William Francis Galvin
Secretary of the Commonwealth
