Commonwealth of Massachusetts
A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick

Whereas Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a heterogeneous group of heritable connective tissue disorders that results in a congenital defect in connective tissue, demonstrated by varying degrees of disability, pain, loss of normal neurological function, unpredictable patterns of collagen and, thus, unpredictable inner and outer body fragility, manifestations of faulty collagen, often resulting in a lifelong series of  multi-system health-related maladies; and

Whereas It is estimated that 1 in 5,000 individuals worldwide are born with one of the six major types of EDS;

Whereas The number and severity of symptoms associated with EDS differ greatly from one individual and family to another as each type of EDS is a distinct, unique disorder; and

Whereas All forms of EDS are lifelong, incurable and potentially debilitating and some types, such as the vascular type, have proven to be particularly life- threatening, with significantly shortened life expectancy;

Whereas This connective tissue disorder is commonly misdiagnosed, may be under-diagnosed and can go undetected for years; and

Whereas Through public awareness, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts seeks to raise awareness of EDS in order to properly diagnose and treat individuals affected by this disorder,

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim May 2012, to be

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Month

And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.

Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston, eighth day of May, in the year two thousand and twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and thirty-fifth.
               By His Excellency

Deval L. Patrick
Governor of the Commonwealth

William Francis Galvin
Secretary of the Commonwealth

God Save the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
