A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick

Whereas Community Health Workers are public health professionals who promote full and equal access to necessary health and social services by applying his or her unique understanding of the experiences, language and culture of the communities they serve; and

Whereas By serving in a unique role, Community Health Workers work to improve access to health care, connecting people to essential services and reducing health disparities based on race, ethnicity, gender and class; and

Whereas Community Health Workers have a documented history in Massachusetts since 1968; and

Whereas Community Health Workers in Massachusetts constitute an expanding workforce estimated at over 2,900 individuals who primarily serve communities to which they are members; and

Whereas Community Health Workers provide direct services, including informal counseling and social support and advocating for individual and community needs; and

Whereas It is appropriate for all Massachusetts residents to acknowledge the work of Community Health Workers and their dedication to the neighborhoods and communities they serve,           

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim September 27th, 2012 to be,

Community Health Worker Day

And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.

Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston, seventeenth day of July, in the year two thousand and twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and thirty-sixth.
