A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick

Whereas The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our state; and

Whereas Fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and

Whereas There were 29,100 fires reported in Massachusetts during 2011 causing 54 civilian deaths, two fire-related firefighter deaths, 323 civilian injuries, 422 firefighter injuries and an estimated $217 million in property damage, and 979 reported arsons; and

Whereas Almost three-quarters of Americans do have an escape plan though less than half have actually practiced it; and

Whereas Residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and will therefore be more likely to survive a fire; and

Whereas Massachusetts’ first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and fire injuries through prevention and education; and

Whereas Residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are more prepared and will therefore be more likely to survive a fire; and

Whereas This year’s theme, “Have Two Ways Out!” serves to remind us to develop and practice a home fire escape plan to stay safe from fire all year round,

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim October 7th – 13th, 2012, to be,

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.
