A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick

Whereas Hunger is an issue of grave concern in the United States and the Commonwealth ; and 

Whereas Statewide, the child food insecurity rate is 16.5percent, compared to just over 12.3percent for the whole population, which means more than 229,000 children in Massachusetts face hunger on a regular basis; and  

Whereas As many as 801,200 individuals in Massachusetts rely on the food provided by various food banks throughout the Commonwealth; and 

Whereas Massachusetts food banks distributed more than 56.6 million pounds of food (enough for 47.2 million meals) in 2012 through their networks of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other community organizations; and   

Whereas The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is committed to taking steps to raise awareness about the need to combat hunger in every part of our state and to provide additional resources that citizens of Massachusetts need, 

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim September 2013, to be

Hunger Action Month 

And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.
