Commonwealth of Massachusetts
A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval Patrick

Whereas Senior centers play a crucial role in our communities, by providing a wide range of services in a convenient and local location for adults over 60; and

Whereas These centers can range from small part-time, to larger full-time facilities with recreation centers, as well as education and health facilities, depending on the needs of the area; and

Whereas The majority of seniors who use these centers visit between 1-3 times a week and stay for an average of 3.3 hours per visit; and

Whereas These senior centers in conjunction with local Councils on Aging (COAs) provide a number of beneficial programs to older residents, such as: senior food pantries, health screenings, computer classes, counseling, support groups,  and myriad other opportunities and benefits; and

Whereas According to the National Council on Aging, senior center participants have higher levels of health, social interaction, and life satisfaction compared to those seniors that do not attend senior centers; and

Whereas For the rapidly growing elder population, now totaling nearly 1.3 million elders, COAs and senior centers provide a safe place for the Commonwealth’s older residents to remain independent, contributing  members of the community well into their later year,

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim September 2013, to be,

 Senior Center Month

And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.

Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston, this twelfth day of September, in the year two thousand and thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and thirty-seventh.

By His Excellency

Deval L. Patrick
Governor of the Commonwealth
