A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick

Whereas PANS (Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome) is a broad category of syndromes characterized by rapid onset of symptoms of mental illness, triggered by infection, environmental or metabolic conditions; and

Whereas PANS encompasses both PANDAS (Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcus) and PITAND (Pediatric Infection-triggered Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric  Disorders); and

Whereas A diagnosis of this disorder can be found through a multitude of extreme behavioral symptoms, such as the sudden development of obsessive compulsive disorder, separation anxiety disorder, deterioration of small motor skills and panic attacks; and

Whereas PANDAS and PITAND are autoimmune in nature, and the gene responsible for the malfunction of the immune system must be turned off in order to counteract the condition and its symptoms; and

Whereas PANS may be treated through the use of antibiotics, IVIG (intravenous immunoglobulin), steroids, NSAIDs (non-steroid anti- inflammatory drugs), SSRIs (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors) and plasmapheresis; and

Whereas The Commonwealth of Massachusetts recognizes the importance of continued research in order to achieve a better understanding of the disorder, its causes and its treatments,

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim October 9th,  2013 to be,
