A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick


Whereas Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the US; and

Whereas Lung cancer will claim an estimated 3,530 lives in Massachusetts this year; and

Whereas According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer takes the lives of more Americans each year than breast, prostate, colon, liver and kidney cancers combined; and

Whereas 70 percent of new lung cancer cases will be diagnosed at a late stage, with a 16 percent five year survival rate; and

Whereas Early lung cancer diagnosis and management protocols exist, yet have not been embraced as the standard of care; and

Whereas Through public awareness the Commonwealth of Massachusetts seeks to provide an opportunity for all people to learn more about the causes and warning signs of this disease, in order for it to be detected early and treated effectively,

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim November 2013, to be,


And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.
