A Proclamation
His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick

Whereas On the morning of February 19th, 1945, the 4th and 5th Marine Divisions invaded Iwo Jima in order to capture the airfields on the island. The island was under Allied control by March 26th; and

Whereas In the thirty-six days of fighting, there were more than 26,000 American casualties, including 6,825 deaths; and

Whereas Today we honor the men and women who gave their lives in the Battle of Iwo Jima. Their courage, sense of duty and patriotism is an inspiration to all generations; and

Whereas The image of the soldiers raising the United States flag is an image Americans will never forget, and a reminder of the cost of freedom,

Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim February 19th, 2014, to be,


And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.

Given at the Executive Chamber in Boston, this tenth day of February, in the year two thousand and fourteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the two hundred and thirty-seventh.
