Commonwealth of Massachusetts A Proclamation His Excellency Governor Deval L. Patrick
WhereasCongenital Diaphragmatic Hernia is a life-threatening condition that affects 1 in every 2,500 children born; and
WhereasThere are two kinds of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, a Bochdalek hernia, a hole in the back of the diaphragm, and a Morgagni hernia, a hole in the front of the diaphragm; and
WhereasCongenital Diaphragmatic Hernia can be diagnosed during pregnancy, allowing treatment options to be ready at birth; and
Whereas Medical complications of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia can include congenital heart defects, chronic lung disease, gastro esophageal reflux and hearing loss; and
Whereas The outlook for babies born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia continues to improve as new surgical techniques and support care is developed; and
Whereas Through public awareness the Commonwealth of Massachusetts seeks to provide an opportunity for all people to learn more about this disease, treatment and diagnosis options and to alleviate the suffering of the families afflicted,
Now, Therefore, I, Deval L. Patrick, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, do hereby proclaim April 19, 2013,
CONGENITAL DIAPHRAGMATIC HERNIA AWARENESS DAY
And urge all the citizens of the Commonwealth to take cognizance of this event and participate fittingly in its observance.
