The Governor’s Statewide Youth Council popped into my life very unexpectedly. One day my guidance counselor pulled me aside after class and handed me a packet about the Council. I had never heard of it before then, but that night I did my research and became truly excited about this opportunity. After writing, rewriting, and re-rewriting my application essays, I sealed my application and mailed it off. Then I just had to wait.
The following October, after the Council had admittedly slipped my mind, I received a letter in the mail. I opened it, and was incredulous to see that I, of all people, had been accepted to the Governor’s Statewide Youth Council! Since opening that letter things have been a blur. From the inauguration ceremony to now, time has been flying in the best way.
Now the Council is focusing on issues relating to education and I am very excited about what we can do. We have been brainstorming many ideas, such as a statewide book drive to help foster reading, and a rally at the Statehouse with various speakers.
The inauguration ceremony still remains a very powerful memory. That feeling of shaking Governor Patrick’s hand and knowing that you are a part of something that can change the state for the better was incredible and I cannot wait to work towards a better future for our Commonwealth.
