Statement of Governor Patrick on U.S. Senate Passage of Health Care Reform

Governor Patrick:

"I applaud the United States Senate for the passage of health care reform legislation this morning. Massachusetts has proven that covering all of its citizens is achievable and affordable, and I am heartened that the nation as a whole is moving towards our model. In particular I want to thank Senators John Kerry and Paul Kirk for their efforts to ensure that the progress that Massachusetts has already made is recognized and protected.

In the end, this is a major step towards the ultimate realization of Ted Kennedy's life's work -- ensuring that people and families across the country who are struggling to make ends meet in a tough economy are given the hope and comfort that health coverage brings. I know that the hard work of reconciling the Senate and House versions of the legislation lies ahead, but I am confident with the leadership of President Obama and our stellar congressional delegation the rest of the nation will soon have what Massachusetts has led the way in providing to its own citizens - quality and affordable health care coverage."
