VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN MEETS WITH LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR MURRAY AS PART OF THE NATIONAL LIEUTENANT GOVERNORS ASSOCIATION MEETING
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Wednesday, March 21, 2012 – Vice President Joe Biden today met with Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray and lieutenant governors from across the country at the National Lieutenant Governors Association’s (NLGA) Federal-State Relations meeting in Washington, D.C. The meeting, led by Vice President Biden, helped to kick off NLGA events which run from March 21 – 23.
Lieutenant Governor Murray currently serves as chair-elect of the NLGA and in July 2012 he will assume the position as chairman.
“As we focus on federal and state relations, it is a great opportunity to meet with Vice President Biden, share best practices and find innovative ways to support sustainable growth and a strong future for Massachusetts,” said Lieutenant Governor Murray. “I look forward to another productive meeting with lieutenant governors from across the country.”
The three-day NLGA meetings are focusing on the budgets of the states and territories and on a range of issues from housing and increasing effectiveness to the costs and reliability of energy to constituents. The meetings will also feature discussions on international trade and investment.
On Thursday, Lieutenant Governor Murray will join his peers for a reception with the Ambassador of Brazil to the United States, Mauro Vieira.
During the meetings, Lieutenant Governor Murray will co-sponsor a resolution with Lieutenant Governor Rick Sheehy of Nebraska for the NLGA to support continued economic development dialogue with Mexico. The proposed resolution commits the NLGA to a two-year program as part of a state alliance partnership with the United States Agency for International Development and the Council of State Governments to enhance the role of states in addressing shared public policy and economic concerns that transcend international borders.
Lieutenant Governor Murray will also co-sponsor a resolution with Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll of Florida for members of the NLGA to recognize the value of a properly equipped and manned U.S. Coast Guard to our nation. Both resolutions will be presented to the NLGA Policy Resolutions Committee on Wednesday.
In addition to Vice President Biden, featured speakers include General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Carole Galante. She will address the largest joint federal-state civil settlement in the nation’s history, leveraging $25-billion from the nation's largest mortgage servicers to provide homeowner relief by requiring banks to reduce the principal on many loans and refinance loans for underwater borrowers. The Obama Administration’s leader for fossil fuels and the energy secretary’s counsel on the electric grid Christopher Smith will present different perspectives on impacts to states of possible sequestration of federal funds. Another presentation during the conference will highlight advances in health information technology.
