Today, it is my distinct honor and pleasure to nominate Barbara A. Lenk to serve as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court.

Judge Lenk brings over 17 years of judicial experience and professional excellence with her to the SJC. She has served on the Appeals Court since 1995, where she is highly respected by her peers and by litigants alike for her insightful and prodigious writing and thoughtful demeanor. She previously served on the Superior Court, so she brings an understanding of the practical demands of the trial court as well.

Before her career on the bench, Judge Lenk was in private practice as a civil litigator in Boston. She has been a leader in a wide variety of professional and civic organizations, including on the Board of Trustees of Western New England College, and frequently serves as a lecturer and panelist on various legal subjects.

Judge Lenk received her undergraduate degree from Fordham University and her law degree from Harvard Law School. She also holds a doctorate in philosophy from Yale University. She is married and is the mother of two teenage daughters.

Judge Lenk brings a wealth of appellate and trial court experience to the SJC, as well as a thoughtfulness and care that reflect a profound sense of justice. She understands how our legal system must be accessible to all persons who come before the courts. I am confident that she will make extraordinary contributions to the fair administration of justice in the Commonwealth as a member of our highest court.

On behalf of the citizens of the Commonwealth, I would also like to thank Justice Judith Cowin for her distinguished service to our high Court and to our judicial system. She will be missed and we wish her all the best in retirement.

I thank the members of the Judicial Nominating Commission and the Joint Bar Committee for the countless hours they devoted to thoroughly assessing the many strong candidates for this vacancy. I look forward to working with the Governor's Council on the confirmation of this nominee and, most of all, to the immensely positive impact the people of Massachusetts can expect from Judge Lenk's presence on the Supreme Judicial Court.

And with that, it is my pleasure to introduce Judge Barbara Lenk.
