Massachusetts Regional Training Institute Small Group Instructor Training

Course Description
Purpose: SGI is a 40-hour course of instructions designed to provide the skills and knowledge necessary to be a small group leader (SGL). Emphasis is placed on the small group instruction process, team building, and the instructor's role as a facilitator.
Scope: SGI is conducted using the concept of learning by doing. Focus of the course is on adult learning, group development, intervention, self-assessment, active listening, and small group instruction methods.
Length: 1 week (5 training days for a total of 40 academic hours).

Course Prerequisites
Students must be either an officer, NCO (E5 or above), or be assigned as or pending an assignment as an instructor. Students must be currently qualified instructors and have completed the Total Army Instructor Training Course (TAITC). Additionally, military personnel must meet height and weight standards IAW AR 600-9 and must not be flagged for APFT failure.

Course Schedule
The Small Group Instruction is offered on the weekend drill schedule (April-June) of each year.
