The defense technology industry consists of two basic elements:
- Companies servicing US Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) contracts for products, services, and research. These companies are unique in that at least half of their sales serve a single demanding customer - the US government.
- Defense installations, which generate significant economic activity through contracts supported and the economic activity of assigned personnel.
Industry Size
In 2006, 2,435 Massachusetts companies secured DoD and DHS contracts valued at $9.8 billion. Of this value, $8.1 billion - or 83% of the contract value - represents work performed in our state.
Installations and federal resources are key contributors to the defense technology cluster. In 2003, the state's two significant military installations - Hanscom AFB and the US Army Soldier System Center-Natick (SSC-N) - employed over 5,400 uniformed and civilian personnel and managed $3.8 billion in contracts. Of these contract dollars, $984 million were let to Massachusetts companies. These figures do not include unique federally-funded research resources such as Lincoln Labs, Draper Labs, and MITRE.

Local organizations, which can assist:
This regional chapter of a national industry association consists of approximately 1200 members representing leading organizations in the New England region that support the defense industrial base. Members include representatives from government and industry (large corporations, small companies, and professional service providers) located across New England. The Chapter's goal is to be the place to exchange information and ideas in the defense and homeland security marketplace.
Funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, the Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) helps companies navigate procurement processes to secure federal contracts. PTAC provides one-on-one counseling, with services, such as identifying contract opportunities, pursuing research and development funding, and assistance with contract management.
As a membership-driven industry association, DTI is building on its original Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) mission to establish New England as the definitive global leader in the defense technology industry. DTI's mission is to enhance the competitiveness of the regional technology
