Collaborative environment offers support to small businesses and college students

BOSTON - April 21, 2010 - The Patrick-Murray Administration and Massachusetts: It's All Here announce its "Open Office Hours" initiative at the Cambridge Innovation Center beginning this week as part of the Commonwealth's commitment to supporting small businesses, job growth and entrepreneurship throughout Massachusetts. A number of staff members will be available on an ongoing basis to meet with college students, entrepreneurs, and small businesses to discuss job and business growth opportunities. Representatives include: Gregory Bialecki, Secretary of Housing and Economic Development; Eric Nakajima, Senior Innovation Policy Advisor; Anne Struthers, Executive Director of Business Development; and Kofi Jones, coordinator of the Massachusetts: It's All Here initiative.

"In order to drive innovation and growth within the Commonwealth we aim to create an active collaboration between business, government and academia," said Secretary Bialecki. "These office hours are a means for such collaboration to service entrepreneurs as they develop their business, as well as college students contemplating their future in Massachusetts."

MassChallenge and the New England Venture Capital Association are other organizations that utilize the Cambridge Innovation Center's facilities and offer open office hours. The partnership of these organizations is key to the Patrick-Murray Administration's Innovation Agenda and brings various industry sectors within the state together to encourage advancement and growth in small businesses and start-ups.

The Cambridge Innovation Center, located at One Broadway in Kendall Square, is an office facility for growing businesses and is the largest collection of start-up companies under one roof on the East Coast, with 240 tenants, mostly startups. The facility offers state-of-the-art businesses and technical services for emerging companies, and currently houses over 175 companies. Their residents are mostly growing technology and life sciences companies, professional service firms, and venture capitalists.

Originally formed and trademarked in 2003, It's All Here is a public private partnership between the Commonwealth's Department of Business Development, MassEcon, MassDevelopment, and the Massachusetts International Trade Council. The campaign is dedicated to maximizing job growth and regional economic prosperity in Massachusetts, strengthening Massachusetts businesses, increasing capital investment in the Commonwealth, supporting all regions and communities in Massachusetts, retaining the state's highly valued workforce, and supporting a diversity of innovative industries.
