Patrick-Murray Administration Names Juan Vega To The Chelsea Housing Authority Board

March 8, 2012 - BOSTON – The Patrick-Murray Administration’s Department of Housing & Community Development today announced the appointment of Juan Vega to the Chelsea Housing Authority (CHA) Board of Commissioners. Mr. Vega will serve as one of five members to oversee the housing authority going forward as the 90-day receivership at the CHA comes to an end.

“Juan’s commitment to active citizenship is a tremendous asset to his community, to the Commonwealth and to the challenges we face,” said Governor Deval Patrick. “We appreciate his willingness to serve in this capacity.”

Mr. Vega currently serves as the Executive Director of Centro Latino de Chelsea, a community-based organization that addresses the health, education and social goals of Latino and immigrant families in the greater Boston area.

Mr. Vega’s appointment comes after the Governor called for the resignation of all five board members and the Executive Director of the CHA after it was discovered they falsified financial documents to the state misrepresenting the Executive Director’s salary. The Governor has also implemented a series of sweeping reforms to increase accountability and transparency in the Commonwealth's public housing system.

Local housing authorities are independent entities and each five-member board is responsible for oversight. Four of the five members are elected or appointed locally and one is appointed by the Governor’s Office.
