 An Act relative to stenographers.

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

SECTION 1.

Chapter 221 of the General Laws is hereby amended by striking out the first paragraph of Section 88 in its entirety and inserting in place thereof the following language;

Upon request of the presiding justice or any party, the stenographer shall furnish a transcript of his notes, or any part thereof, taken at a trial or hearing, for which he shall be paid by the party requesting it at the rate of four dollars per page for the original and one dollar per page for each additional copy ordered at the same time.  In the event that daily copy is ordered by the presiding justice or any party, the rate shall be five dollars and fifty cents per page for the original copy and one dollar and fifty cents per page for each additional copy.  If transcript is ordered by the presiding justice or, in a criminal case, by the district attorney, payment therefore at the same rate shall be made by the Commonwealth upon a voucher approved by him, and, in a criminal case, the charges of transcripts furnished to said justice and to the district attorney shall be taxed like other expenses.
