In the Year Two Thousand and Seven.

 An Act relative to the Massachusetts Sheriffs Education and Training Committee.

 

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:


 

Section 1.  The general laws are hereby amended by inserting after Chapter 37 the following new chapter:

 

Chapter 37A. Massachusetts Sheriffs Education and Training Committee; Membership.

    There shall be a
Massachusetts sheriffs education and training committee within the Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association. Members of said committee shall be as follows: the Sheriff of each of the counties and of the former counties shall serve or shall appoint the training director or other suitable designee to serve at the pleasure of the appointing sheriff.  The committee shall elect a chairperson annually. The committee shall set policies and standards for the training of deputy sheriffs and correction officers in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, notwithstanding the provisions of section 24M of chapter 90. The committee shall review and recommend to the president of the Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association an annual appropriation for the administration of the committee, and for the delivery of standardized training.
