In the Year Two Thousand and Seven.

 An Act relative to the Massachusetts Sheriffs Association.

 

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:


 

SECTION 1.  Chapter 37 of the ______ Official Edition of the General Laws is hereby amended by adding at the end of Section 25 the following new section (s):

 

Section 26.  The sheriffs may appoint suitable persons to serve as executive director and assistant executive director to the Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association for the purpose of promoting local corrections resources through the coordination and standardization of services and programs together with providing information, technical assistance and educational services to ensure consistency in organization, goals, operations and procedures.  Said executive director and assistant executive director shall not be subject to provisions of section forty-five of chapter thirty of the General Laws nor the provisions of chapter thirty-one and shall serve at the will and the pleasure of a majority of the sheriffs.

            The executive director may expend such funds as are appropriated therefor, together with additional funds from federal grants and other contributions that may be made available for these purposes and may hire such professional assistants as shall be authorized by the sheriffs.

 

SECTION 2.  This act shall take effect upon its passage.
