Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
SECTION 1. Section 136A of chapter 140 of the General Laws, as appearing in the 2004 Official Edition, is hereby amended by striking out the definition of “Dog officer” and inserting in place thereof the following definition:-
“Animal control officer” or “Dog officer”, an officer appointed under section 151.
SECTION 2. The first paragraph of section 147A of said chapter 140, as so appearing, is hereby amended by adding the following sentence:- A by-law or ordinance may require that a person receive certain training before being employed as an animal control officer. The training shall include, but not be limited to, attending a certificate program offered by the Animal Control Officers Association of Massachusetts. An incumbent animal control officer, if so required, shall complete the certificate program not later than 1 year after the effective date of the by-law or ordinance.
