AN ACT authorizing the teachers' retirement board to grant certain retirement benefits

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

Whereas, The deferred operation of this act would tend to defeat its purpose, which is forthwith to make certain retirement benefits available, therefore it is hereby declared to be an emergency law, necessary for the immediate preservation of the public convenience.

SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any general or special law or rule to the contrary and in order to promote the public good, the teachers retirement board shall pay Virginia English the surviving spouse of Walter English, a former member of the teacher’s retirement system, retirement benefits, as of January 1, 1999, equal to the benefits she would have been paid to her if she had been named the beneficiary of Walter English under option (c) of subdivision (2) of section 12 of chapter 32 of the General Laws.
