Directions
The State Library is located in the Massachusetts State House. Reference services are located on the third floor in room 341, newspapers and periodicals are on the fourth floor in room 442, and special collections are in the basement, room 55.

PublicTransportation
Take the MBTA Red or Green Lines to the Park Street Station. Walk through the Boston Common, following the Freedom Trail (marked by a red line on the sidewalk) until you come to Beacon Street. The State House will be directly in front of you.

If you need further information, you can consult the MBTA Home page for transit maps, fares and schedules.

Driving Directions
The State House is located at 24 Beacon Street in the heart of Boston. Unfortunately, there is no free or visitor parking available. Metered spaces are available on a limited basis. The closest parking garage is the Boston Common Garage located on Charles Street, between the Boston Common and the Public Garden.

For more detailed directions please visit Mapquest.

Due to the lack of parking, the use of public transportation is encouraged.

Within the State House
There are three public entrances to the State House:

(1) Hooker entrance on Beacon Street at the front of the building
(2) Bowdoin Street entrance (handicapped accessible) in front right corner of the building
(3) Ashburton Park entrance (handicapped accessible) off Bowdoin Street near rear of building

When going to Special Collections, use either the Hooker or Bowdoin Street entrance.

The main reading room (room 341) and the periodicals balcony (room 442) are located in the rear of the building.

Special Collections is in the West Wing at the front of the building. Proceed to the end of the west wing corridor on the first floor and take the elevator at the end of the hall to the basement. Special Collections is to the right when exiting the elevator.

Mission Statement
The State Library has maintained a position of vital importance in the State House since its formal establishment in 1826. Starting from a collection of maps, statute books, and government documents, the Library has grown into a multifaceted resource for legislators, executive personnel, state employees, historians, genealogists, and interested citizens. Through political turmoils of over one hundred and seventy-five years in the State House, the State Library has continuously reflected the progressive ideals of the legislative and executive branches of government.

It is our continuing mission to serve the research needs of the executive and legislative branches of government and other users and as the official depository for Massachusetts state documents by:
  • Adequate staffing of professional and para-professional personnel for the provision of quality services
  • Full development of a strong and comprehensive collection of information materials in law, public affairs, current issues, and Massachusetts history
  • Automation of library functions to provide better library services
  • Well planned use of space for effective library services in an attractive and convenient location
  • Preservation and conservation of library collections
