Newspapers
The State Library currently subscribes to many Massachusetts local newspapers, including the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald. Paper copies are retained for one month for most newspapers, although some are retained permanently on microfilm. The library also subscribes to a selection of national papers, including the New York Times, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post.

Journals and Magazines
The State Library has a large selection of public and current affairs periodicals on the fourth floor balcony. The library also carries most US law reviews and journals. These are kept in the stacks and can be requested at the reference desk in the main reading room on the third floor.

Microfilm
The periodicals balcony serves as the main area for microfilm materials. The library retains a number of journals, magazines and newspapers on microfilm, as well as Congressional Hearings, Governors' Executive Orders, Governors' Press Releases, Legislative Documents, Massachusetts Election Statistics, the Massachusetts Register, and the State House News Service.

Zimmer Index
Compiled by librarians at the State Library of Massachusetts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Zimmer Index covers newspaper articles of interest to legislators and citizens of the Commonwealth. This resource indexes newspapers from Boston and the surrounding area from 1878 to 1937.

Index to the Boston Globe and Boston Herald, 1962-1983
Located on the fourth floor balcony of the library, this index is the only known public index of either the Boston Globe or the Boston Herald for the time period between 1962 and 1983. The index is selective in coverage, primarily documenting persons and events related to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
