Novelist
NoveList is a fiction database that provides subject heading access, reviews, annotations, and much more for over 120,000 fiction titles.

Science Online
Science Online is a Facts On File database that provides access to reference materials in the areas of Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Forensic Science, Mathematics, Physics, Space and Astronomy, and Weather and Climate.

Grove Art Online
Grove Art Online provides web access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art, ed. Jane Turner (1996, 34 vols.) and The Oxford Companion to Western Art, ed. Hugh Brigstocke (2001). Grove Art Online also offers ongoing additions of new and updated articles, over 3,000 thumbnail art images and line drawings displayed in the text of articles, extensive image links, and sophisticated search and navigation tools.

JSTOR
JSTOR is a not-for-profit organization with a dual mission to create and maintain a trusted archive of important scholarly journals, and to provide access to these journals as widely as possible. JSTOR offers researchers the ability to retrieve high-resolution, scanned images of journal issues and pages as they were originally designed, printed, and illustrated. The journals archived in JSTOR span many disciplines including Arts, Sciences, Law, and Politics.

Catalogs and In-house Databases:

Online catalog (no card required)
Search through over 100,000 records from 1978 to the present, including Massachusetts state documents. Current periodicals appear in the catalog as do federal documents from 1990 to present. The catalog is maintained under the Central/Western Massachusetts Automated Resource Sharing Catalog (C/WMARS), an automated library network that consists of academic, public and special libraries.

Statewide virtual catalog
The Statewide Virtual Catalog searches through most Massachusetts public library catalogs and several academic library catalogs for a book, CD, audio or video and then informs you who owns it and whether it is on the shelf. Access is through our network provider, Central/Western Massachusetts Automated Resource Sharing (C/WMARS).

Boston Library Consortium virtual catalog
The Boston Library Consortium Virtual Catalog searches through approximately 20 area university and research library catalogs for a book, CD, audio or video and then informs you who owns it and whether it is on the shelf. State employees may request a title through the state library; others should check with their public library to request an inter-library loan.

Massachusetts Special Collections database
A database, maintained by the Massachusetts Library and Information Network, of over 600 archives and manuscript collections in Massachusetts.

Government Printing Office (GPO) catalog
Bibliographic database of federal documents issued from July 1976 to present.

Catalog of U.S. Government publications
Bibliographic index to federal publications, Jan. 1994 to present. Provides links to Internet full-text of titles where available.

Town reports database
The State Library's collection of Annual Town Reports may be found in the general collection and in the Special Collections Department. Special Collections holdings are indicated within circular ( brackets ), e.g. (1826). Updated Bimonthly.

Wetslaw
The State Library is pleased to offer in-library access to Westlaw to state employees. West's online legal research service provides instant access to statutes, cases, news, business information, public records, forms, and more.. (Remote access is not available).

State House News Service
Full-text of SHNS news copy back to 1986 and press releases from 1997 to present. Coverage includes reports of Senate and House floor debate as well as feature stories based on committee hearings, press conferences, etc. Material updated daily (access to paper copy for current month).(Remote access is not available).

Instatrac
This Bill tracking service includes bill text and history information, committee agendas, session calendars, public hearing notices, legislator press releases, Governor's news, state agency news, and legislator contact information.. (Remote access is not available)

Massachusetts General Court (legislature)
The Legislature's web site contains:

  • Full-text, unofficial edition (i.e. not annotated) of the General Laws.
  • Full-text of Acts and Resolves, 1997-date.
  • Status of current session's bills.
  • Full text of current fiscal year's general appropriation act.
  • Committee Hearings for the upcoming week.
  • Current committee membership, contact information, and bills referred to committee.

Those with a State Library of Massachusetts card may also use Loislaw to access the General Laws.

Code of Massachusetts Regulations (CMR)
The Massachusetts Trial Court Law Libraries have compiled a list of regulations that are available on the web. Please note that not all regulations are available. A paper copy of the complete CMR is available at the State Library. Those with a State Library of Massachusetts card may also use Loislaw to access the complete CMR.

Governor's Executive Orders
Executiver Orders issued by the governor (in chronological order) from the Massachusetts Trial Court Libraries web site. The State Library also has hard copies of these orders.

Mass. Court Decisions (from the Social Law Library)
Slip opinions from the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, Appeals Courts, and selected Superior Court cases from 1999 to date. Note: this is a commercial site, but these decisions are free.

The Massachusetts Trial Court Law Libraries have compiled a listing of online bylaws and codes of ordinances for Massachusetts communities.

Municipal and county codes
This page from the Seattle Public Library lists sites where U.S. municipal codes, i.e. compilations of ordinances or by-laws, and county codes can be searched.

Corporations database from the Secretary of the Commonwealth
