    DLS requires that any laboratories and/or companies that analyze air or bulk samples in connection with asbestos response actions, hazard assessments, building inventory, exposure assessment or associated project be certified by DLS, pursuant to M.G.L. Chapter 149, Section 6B and its implementing regulations, 453 CMR 6.00.  This certification ensures that the provider has met the appropriate proficiency requirements and is monitored by DLS for competency and accuracy.  Building managers and property owners should ensure that any air or bulk samples collected in their buildings be analyzed by a certified Asbestos Analytical Service Provider.  The provider should be certified in at least one of the classes listed below, and depends on the type of sample collected (air or bulk sample), analysis desired, and the type of building the sample was collected from.

    (a)   Class A Certificate holders are authorized to use polarized light microscopy (PLM) for the analysis of bulk asbestos samples originating in all facilities and locations subject to the requirements of 453 CMR 6.00, including school buildings and other facilities subject to the requirements of AHERA.

    (b)   Class B Certificate holders are authorized to use polarized light microscopy (PLM) for the analysis of bulk asbestos samples originating in all facilities and locations subject to the requirements of 453 CMR 6.00, except school buildings and other facilities subject to the requirements of AHERA.

    (c)   Class C Certificate holders are authorized to use phase contrast microscopy (PCM) for the analysis of air samples originating in all facilities and locations subject to the requirements of 453 CMR 6.00, including school buildings and other facilities subject to the requirements of AHERA.

    (d)   Class D Certificate holders are authorized to use transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for the analysis of air and bulk asbestos samples originating in all facilities and locations subject to the requirements of 453 CMR 6.00, including school buildings and other facilities subject to the requirements of AHERA.

    Contractors performing asbestos abatement work in Massachusetts are required to be licensed by the MA Department of Labor Standards (DLS) pursuant to M.G.L. Chapter 149, Section 6B and its implementing regulations, 453 CMR 6.00. The license ensures that the contractor has attended an approved asbestos abatement training course and is monitored by DLS health and safety inspectors for safe work practices.
