DLS' Asbestos Laboratory (The Lab) provides analytical and technical support to engineers and inspectors within the department, as well as public agencies. Samples are collected from workplaces throughout the Commonwealth. They are evaluated to assist in the identification, and subsequent control and elimination of hazards in the workplace.
The Lab is a participant in the Industrial Hygiene Proficiency Analytical Testing Program (Asbestos PLM) administered by the American Industrial Hygiene Association. The Lab has been deemed proficient in asbestos analysis since 2013.

The DLS Asbestos Laboratory accepts samples collected by properly trained individuals on behalf of municipal and state agencies only. Information on sample collection may be obtained by contacting the lab directly.
Collection of bulk asbestos samples requires certain precautions be taken by the person collecting the sample(s) to avoid unnecessary exposure to fibers of him/herself or others. The following general sample collection guidelines are based upon U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Federal Regulations Part 763.86 Asbestos – Sampling.
