Because they carry the burden of proof, prosecutors have the first opportunity to speak to jurors during their opening statements. It is important that prosecutors use this opportunity to make a positive first impression and persuasively present the Commonwealth’s case without arguing. In this thirty minute webinar, Carrie Newton from MDAA’s Family Violence and Sexual Assault Unit will review the purpose and goals of opening statements, discuss the restrictions for opening statements and suggest best practices for delivering an effective opening.
