| How to Convert Decimal Degrees (DD)
to Degrees-Minutes-Seconds (DMS)
Method One - Use
the Calculator on any Windows 95/98/NT 4/2000 PC.
(1) From the START
button, click Programs->Accessories->Calculator
(2) From the Calculator's
View menu click Scientific
(3) Enter the coodinate
in decimal degrees (example: 42.36824)
(4) Click the 'dms' button
(5) The DMS value will appear,
as follows: 42.2205664, which translates to 42 deg., 22 min., 06 sec.
Method Two - Manual
calculation
(1) The Degrees
are simply the numbers to the left of the decimal (using 42.36824 as in
the example above, the degrees would be 42)
(2) To determine the Minutes,
multiply the number to the right of the decimal point by 60 (example: .36824
x 60 = 22.0944)
(3) The Minutes are the
numbers to the left of the decimal point (in this example, 22)
(4) To determine the Seconds,
multiply the number to the right of the decimal point by 60 (example: .0944
x 60 = 5.664)
(5) The Seconds are the
numbers to the left of the decimal point, rounded up (in this example,
06)
Using either method, the latitude/longitude
DD coordinate 42.36824 = 42 22 06 in DMS
