MACMAPP Training
MACMAPP is a
partnership program between GIS software vendor Environmental Systems Research Institute
(ESRI) and the Executive
Office of Energy & Environmental Affairs (EOEEA).
Resources provided through this program include ArcView GIS software,
all MassGIS datalayers and imagery for the grantee's area of interest,
and training materials that include online training from ESRI, a 500+
page tutorial Getting to Know ArcGIS,
and MassGIS instructor-led training workshop.
Several training options are outlined below. You may also call or
e-mail the OpenSpace staff at MassGIS with any questions you have about
ArcView; contact information is given at the bottom of this page.
Online ArcView Tutorials
The documentation included with ArcView
contains detailed tutorials;
these use data that is optionally installed with the software as
ArcTutor. Some of these tutorials have movies that should be
helpful
to new software users. All tutorials are also available on-line
at http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.3/index.cfm?TopicName=Tutorials. Of particular interest to new ArcView users are the Getting Started,
ArcCatalog and ArcMap tutorials. Editing GIS Features will also be
useful when OpenSpace data is compiled.
Instructor-led MassGIS Training Workshops
**
Please note that the MassGIS MACMAPP training workshop is NOT for
people who have never used ArcView. Familiarity with the basics
of the
software are a prerequisite for the training workshop. **
Scheduled
workshops
The MassGIS
instructor-led training workshop is a two-day class,
running from 9:30 to 4:30 both days. Trainings
are scheduled in Boston,
at Westfield State College, and occasionally at Bristol Community
College
in Fall River. The trainings are scheduled
both on
consecutive days and separated by a day; we try to vary the days of the
week so
every schedule can be accommodated. Typically,
two or more alternate dates will be
proposed via e-mail and
the response to that e-mail will determine the scheduled dates of the
training.
A very large amount of
material
must be covered in these two days if
attendees hope to leave with a working knowledge of ArcGIS. This training needs to be very fast-paced,
and therefore all attendees must have a reasonable grasp of the
material
presented in Getting to Know ArcGIS
Desktop, the ESRI Press book that ESRI shipped with the software. The training will include hands-on exercises
that reflect tasks typically done by environmental management and
conservation
groups. Please come to the training with
questions that you have from working with the software; this is a great
chance
to get answers and your questions will help others in the class.

Additional topics
can be covered if people are interested;
possibilities include on-screen digitizing and using GPS data. Again, please come with questions.
At this time, we
are limiting attendees to three people per
organization. These trainings will
continue to be scheduled, and additional staff may possibly attend in
the
future as space permits. Training at
an
advanced level may be scheduled if there is sufficient demand.
See a list of upcoming MACMAPP
training workshops.
Refert to the directions to and information (PDF) about the
EEA training room
in Boston. The
exact location of the training at
Westfield State College varies and that location with directions and
parking
information will be sent via e-mail to attendees in the week before the
scheduled training. A campus map with
directions to the college is available at http://www.wsc.ma.edu/About_WSC/Directions_to_Campus.html.
Additional Free GIS Training
There are many on-line resources for learning ArcView, including a
course developed by the National Park Service: http://www.nps.gov/gis/outreach/arcgis9.html.
ESRI provides some free on-line training: http://training.esri.com/gateway/index.cfm?fa=search.results&cannedsearch=2. Some of this is very specialized and some is the introductory
unit of an on-line course.
