"SURVEYING FOR GIS PRACTITIONERS"

Many GIS Professionals have had limited exposure to the issues surrounding the legal and technical aspects of surveying parcel boundaries. This workshop introduced the process of proper line determination and parcel-based mapping. Mr. Allen discussed those areas that cause the greatest concern to a surveyor when they hear that the GIS professional is incorporating their legal boundary determination into a GIS data set. Topics covered in this presentation included:

  • the role of the surveyor
  • how a parcel survey is performed
  • what is submitted to the registry of deeds
  • accuracy of the measurements
  • accuracy required for a legal boundary determination
  • assumed coordinate systems vs. state plane grid
  • curves in descriptions
  • what roll can GPS have in boundary determination
  • and a look at other legal boundary cadastral system that are in place
