“CAD & GIS Interoperability”
First Date
This session is co-sponsored by the Rhode Island GIS,
Rhode Island Society of Professional Land Surveyors,
and Bristol Community College’s Engineering Department
When: Friday, March 21st, 2008, 2 PM- 4 PM
Where: Bristol Community College, 777 Elsbree Street, Fall River, MA 02720
Second Date
This session is co-sponsored by
The Massachusetts Association of Land Surveyors and Civil Engineers
When: Friday, March 28th, 2008, 10 AM- Noon
Where: Auburn Town Hall, 104 Central Street, Auburn, MA 01501
Abstract:
GIS practitioners are often faced with the need to integrate CAD data
into their GISs. Increasingly, CAD users are exploring using their data
in a GIS or data developed for a GIS in their CAD software. Speaker
presentations will focus on interoperability issues due to differences
between the software and differences caused by the different methods of
organizing data in the two software environments. Issues that can
arise when mixing data from different sources developed for different
purposes will also be presented. We hope that these sessions will
serve to foster increased dialog between GIS and survey professionals
in an age when use and availability of map information is rapidly
increasing.
Presentations:
Katie Jacques, GIS Specialist, Microdesk, Inc. (both sessions)
Are you constantly getting CAD drawings from engineers or contractors
and don't know quite what to do with them? Or are you a beginner to the
CAD world and want to know more about leveraging CAD data within ArcGIS
Desktop? Come to this informational session on CAD/GIS integration to
learn about the tools within ArcGIS Desktop to take full advantage of
that valuable CAD data.

Mike Doyle, GISP, GIS Project Manager, Fuss & O’Neill (both sessions) This presentation will focus on the integration of CAD data collected
in the field using Survey or GPS methods directly into a geodatabase
using ModelBuilder and ArcGIS Server. The presentation highlights the
processes required to create a collection list for the data collection
tools, and how that moves into CAD formats and finally is processed
through the internet and into a working GIS database. Mike will also
discuss various tools used by his company, including ArcGIS' Survey
Analyst, as well as different scripting choices they have made, and the
usability of this type of process to end users (non-GIS proficient
users). Finally, Mike will discuss the hurdles that they have
encountered, including those involving ArcGIS Server limitations,
internet requirements, CAD annotation, and adoption of this type of
application by surveyors and non-GIS users.

Rich Vannozzi, PLS, UConn Ph.D. Candidate (March 21st session)
ArcGIS Survey Analyst now includes a new workflow called the Cadastral
Editor and feature class called the cadastral fabric. See how
georeferenced CAD data can be brought into this cadastral fabric and
how the Cadastral Editor can be utilized to improve the spatial
accuracy of a cadastral layer while at the same time maintaining the
spatial integrity of the original CAD data. Tricks and tips for
georeferencing those old assumed datum CAD files utilizing
orthophotography will also be presented.

Mark Violette, PLS, Sr. Project Manager, Schofield Brothers of New England (March 28th session) This presentation will provide a Land Surveyor’s perspective of the
quality of various data sets and is intended to demonstrate the
relative accuracy of data layers such as parcels, buildings, wetlands,
contours, etc., through comparisons of their positional locations, with
the various methods used to incorporate the data into a GIS, including
data from CAD files. Additionally, it is intended to help users
understand the tolerances and potential impact of the improper use of
the data.

What
is the MGIC Seminar Series?
The
MGIC Seminar Series is a bi-monthly event that typically occurs from
September through June, featuring presentations by professionals
from a variety of disciplines that are using GIS. The
seminar series is sponsored by the Massachusetts Geographic Information
Council through its education and outreach function. The seminar
meetings provide an opportunity for interested individuals to share
ideas and learn about trends in GIS; the meetings also provide a chance
to network with people working in the field.
MGIC meetings are open to the public and are typically attended by
representatives from all levels of government and the private sector
who have an interest in geographic information technologies and
applications. If you have questions about the seminars, contact Paul
Nutting at MassGIS at paul.nutting@state.ma.us.
If you would like to be added to the mailing list to receive seminar
announcements fill out the MGIC Announcements
List form.
